What do we have to learn? A farewell? Does the quartet from Berlin saddle up one last time, rides off into the dawn and leaves the cruel world behind? Well, the prairie is wide and dark, but it is a fact: they are on their way, saddlebags jam-packed with the finest music.
The unique style of TUNES OF DAWN has been deepened and further elaborate without losing its spontaneity or even its proper dose of disrespect for integrating the most diverse elements. So, they have again produced an album which combines different styles, sometimes only as a very short inspiration, beneath the roof of a continuously rocking and dark atmosphere.
Again, the four band members play into each others hands implicitly. Whether in perfectly attuned rhythmical movements or regarding the sound structures being raised between guitars and keyboard and in which their melodies intertwine and melt to a higher level.
At the same time, they keep a twinkle in their teary eye which T.O.D. are well-known for. Such as in songs like "Goodbye Cruel World“ or "Suicide Challenge“ in which the ambivalent lyrics are reflected in a musical association with rich, pure rock music including strong electronic elements.
However, T.O.D. show as well that they are able to face the serious sides of life by setting the lyrics of "Refuse Resist" which a friend from Finland wrote after the recent shooting rampage over there. Or by the apocalyptic atmosphere which is created in sounds and words in "With The Moon Comes The End".
Also, fans of a quiet mood and a solid heartache will not miss out. Songs like the Zeromancer cover version "Cupola“ or "A Warm Sigh At 6°C“ in the style of a ballad make for moments of contemplation within the driving flow of the new album. The last of which deserves again a closer look to realise that T.O.D. more often than not deal with the difficult situations in life.
Describing the complexity of life, casting a glance behind the obvious is as much part of their music as simply delivering finest rock'n'roll and having a blast. Forming unique combinations of lyrics and music by what life throws to them, creating a diversity that will never become random, that is what TUNES OF DAWN stand for.
This is also evident in the way the first two albums took towards the new one. To combine the rough and rocking atmosphere of the first with the newly developed sound dimensions of the second and refine them, sowed the seeds for new ideas and influences which helped to create the new oeuvre. Thus, a flower arose that, indeed, succeeds in shining in dark colours.
